Tapping Tools

A tapping sleeve is a mechanical fitting installed around a pressurized pipe to create a sealed connection point for hot tapping. It provides a flanged outlet where a tapping machine and cutter are mounted, allowing a new branch line to be cut into the main without depressurizing or shutting down the system.

Small-diameter taps up to about 12" can be powered by a heavy-duty electric drill, such as a Milwaukee Hole Hawg or Superhawg, mounted to an electric tapping machine like the TM100 or TM200. Larger diameter taps typically require hydraulic drive systems for the torque and stroke length needed.

Schallert's tapping machine lineup covers taps from 3/4" up to 72" in diameter. Smaller electric machines like the TM100 and TM200 handle taps up to 12", while hydraulic machines such as the TM300, TM400, and TM6120 handle large diameter taps from 12" up to 72".

Carbide tipped cutters are the most popular style, suitable for most pipeline materials and available up to 72" in diameter, offering longer tool life. HSS (high speed steel) tipped cutters are more economical and specifically ideal for tapping into steel lines up to 48" in diameter.
