A jack actuator is a mechanical device that uses a threaded screw mechanism to produce linear motion. In line stopping operations, jackscrew actuators extend a chrome boring bar to push the line stop head into the pipeline. They are available in manual handwheel, remote chain reduction, remote gear reduction, and hydraulic configurations depending on pipe size and site accessibility.

The four primary types of actuators are mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electric. Schallert Enterprises' jackscrew actuators are mechanical in principle, with options for manual handwheel operation, remote chain reduction drives, remote gear reduction drives, and hydraulic power for the heaviest large-diameter applications up to 192-inch stroke lengths.

Schallert jackscrew actuators cover pipe sizes from 8 inches up to 84 inches. The JS048-200 handles 8- to 12-inch pipes, the JS072-300-RC covers 14- to 24-inch pipes, the JS108-300-RC supports 30- to 42-inch pipes, the JS144-400-RG handles 48- to 66-inch pipes, and the JS192-500-RG is rated for 72- to 84-inch large-diameter pipelines.

All Schallert jackscrew actuators are rated to 350 psi. This pressure rating applies across the full product range, from the compact JS048-200 with a 2-inch boring bar up to the heavy-duty JS192-500-RG hydraulic model, ensuring safe and reliable performance across municipal, industrial, and water infrastructure pipeline environments.

Stroke length is etched directly onto the chrome boring bar and is visible through a porthole located near the base of the actuator housing. This allows operators to monitor bar extension in real time during line stop insertion without disassembling the unit, improving both operational accuracy and on-site safety during pipeline isolation procedures.
