Hot tapping involves attaching a specialized valve and fitting to the live main. The tapping machine is then mounted to the valve, and it drills through the pipe wall. Once the cut is complete, the cutter and the pipe section (coupon) are retracted, and the valve is closed, allowing the machine to be removed safely without service interruption.
