Pipeline Hot Tapping

The procedure involves welding or bolting a fitting to the live pipe, followed by attaching a permanent valve. A hot tapping machine is then bolted to the valve. The machine's cutter is advanced through the open valve to drill a hole (the 'tap') into the pipe. The cut piece, or 'coupon,' is retracted, the valve is closed, and the tapping machine is removed, leaving a new, accessible connection.

Our folding head line stoppers are designed to be inserted through a smaller, reduced-branch fitting and valve. For example, a 24-inch line can be stopped using a 16-inch valve. This design significantly reduces project costs by allowing for smaller taps, smaller and less expensive valves, and smaller fittings, all without compromising the effectiveness of the line stop operation.

The right cutter depends on the pipe material. Carbide tipped cutters are the most versatile and popular choice for most standard pipelines. For tapping into steel lines, we recommend High-Speed Steel (HSS) tipped cutters. For concrete-lined pipes, our specialized diamond segment cutters are essential for achieving a clean and efficient cut without damaging the pipe or the equipment.

Our equipment is engineered for high-pressure environments. Most of our tapping machines are rated for up to 350 PSI.
